Tithing Is A Commandment From The Lord

Sometimes, we think of tithing as something like a freewill offering to God. However, tithes are different from offerings and not something we can just stop giving, thinking that God is okay with it. Tithing is a commandment from the Lord. As people who aim to please God (2 Timothy 2:4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.), we need to have a mindset that tithing is very important and holy to the Lord (Proverbs 3:9 Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;). It’s not an option given by God but rather a statute, and we ought to be faithful when it comes to giving our tithes.

To emphasize the fact that tithing is a commandment from God, we’ll look at an example in the Bible that pertains to how big of a deal it is. We’ll add weight to tithes so that we may further grasp how important it is. Let’s look at the book of Malachi. If you read chapter 3, you’ll find God rebuking Israel for not being able to give their tithes to the Lord (Malachi 3:8-9 Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.  “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’  “In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me.). Because of that, God told Israel that they were robbing him. This is actually a pretty interesting statement from God. You see, He is God, and actually, no one could really rob Him. It’s doubtful that there is any human being who could go into God’s realm or heaven  and steal from God. That’s also pretty much what Israel was thinking: How could they rob God? But God told them that they were robbing Him by not giving their tithes to Him.

But why does God feel robbed when we don’t give our tithes to Him? When we give our tithes to the Lord, it’s not like giving to a beggar. When a beggar asks us for change, if we choose not to give because we want to use it for something else, the beggar doesn’t have any right to get angry or feel robbed because the change is not theirs but yours. However, when it comes to tithing and God, it’s different. God is God; He is the creator of everything. In other words, He owns everything here on earth, including the things we have (1 Corinthians 10:26 for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.). That is why, in reality, nothing can truly belong to us. The money we have, the house we have, even the phones we buy, they’re all God’s, and we are just stewards.

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.

God could make the tithes we give 20 percent or perhaps 50 percent. If ever He did that, no matter how painful it would be to our pockets, we should still give since those are His resources anyway, not ours. But in the end, because God is loving, God tells His people to trust Him in that aspect, and He still asks us to trust Him today. Yes, ten percent is kind of a big amount already, but as we obey God by tithing, He will pour out His blessings from heaven until there is no more need, and our fields will not fail to bear fruit (Malachi 3:10-11 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty.). These things apply to us right now as people of the new covenant.
