What Does The Bible Say About Choosing A Husband?

Christian women who are looking for a husband must take the time to consider several Biblical pointers first. Choosing the right husband is a serious task, and it is life-changing. We want to make sure that we are equipped with the Word of God first and that our hearts are ready before we make a decision and say yes to anyone who offers their commitment. It is said in (Acts 13:22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.) that women should seek a man that is “after God’s own heart.” The most important relationship that any woman could experience is her relationship with Jesus Christ, and the second most important is her relationship with her husband. Our priority is our Lord Jesus Christ; our potential husband must understand this vertical relationship.

The Bible advises women to choose a potential husband who is focused on walking in obedience to Jesus Christ’s commandments (You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. 1 Corinthians 10:21). The right potential husband is the one who lives a life that is dedicated and devoted to glorifying Jesus Christ. Christian women are so blessed that God has not left us without pointers to remember. Our God has given us guidelines on how to pick the right husband and how to enjoy a life that is full of Him and abundant with the Fruit of the Spirit. Always remember that getting married to someone is a lifetime commitment, so one must pray first and seek wisdom from the Holy Spirit before making a decision.

What Does The Bible Say About Choosing A Husband?

What qualities should you look for in a husband? As mentioned in 1 Timothy 3, it is crucial that we seek a man that walks with God. The Apostle Paul is saying that a woman should look for a man who has control over his demeanor and at the same time is patient. The right husband is full of humility rather than pride. A Christian husband is someone who has a sober mental attitude and can contain or master his emotions. Besides being able to control himself, the best husband for the Christian woman is the one that has the heart to serve the Lord. He must understand the importance of the church and have fellowship with other believers.

A Good Christian Husband

A good Christian husband loves God and his neighbors. It is essential that you choose a potential husband that is able to teach the Word of God to other men. He must have the heart to share and extend the Gospel to those who have not heard it before. Look for men who are not given to drunkenness and not prone to violence. Check his faith and his mental state as well. Your future husband must also know the importance of praying and giving thanks to the Lord. He should not be envious of others but help others flourish and improve their skills and knowledge of God.

It is advisable that you get to know the man and verify the authenticity of his faith first. His qualities must be that of a mature believer. Apart from knowing what his strengths are as a man, it is also necessary that you know his weaknesses. You want to make sure that you know who you’ll be living with in the future. Is your future husband strong and wise enough to protect you? Is your future husband selfless? Is he willing to give his life to you as Christ gave His life to the Church?

Ephesians 5:25-30 reminds us, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—for we are members of his body.”

Someone Who Loves God First

The perfect husband is the one who always surrenders to God’s will. Your future husband must genuinely love our God. He must live his life just like Jesus Christ. Find a husband who models his life after Christ. His love for his wife should be grounded not only in love but in his faith in Christ. Your future husband must be able to provide you with all the needs of a family. He must be hardworking, and his work must reflect the work of Christ. All his days must be dedicated to glorifying God. Choose a husband who can sit down with you and discuss the Bible. Choose a husband who seeks the Kingdom of God first, before material things.

Always pray to the Lord Jesus and hear the voice of the Spirit. Children of God have access to His favors and blessings. Romans 8:14 tells us, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” (ESV) You must acknowledge your dependence on the Holy Spirit and always be willing to submit to His will. Be sensitive to His leading and pray unceasingly. The key to seeking the right Christian husband is seeking the One True God.
