What Does The Bible Say About Choosing A Wife?

One of the greatest gifts that God has given to men is to enjoy a relationship with his wife. Having a wife is a blessing from God Himself. God is the author of marriage, and He is the one who designed it (Genesis 2:18-25). If you are one of those individuals wondering how to choose a wife, then it is recommended that you start with the Word of God. There is no better source of wisdom and knowledge on how to choose the right wife than to consult the One Who has created the gift of marriage. 

There are several Biblical pointers that you need to remember when looking for the right wife. The Bible should serve as your guideline on how you can successfully and triumphantly enjoy your marriage with your wife. God has given us instructions and has provided us with ideas on how we can carefully pick the right partner. Bear in mind that marriage is a lifelong commitment, and we need to make sure that we stick with our spouse through thick and thin. Remember that the wife you choose is final. You can’t return her to her parents or exchange her for someone else. Your wife is final, and God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16 For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.).

If a Christian man is to choose a wife, she should be a fellow believer in Christ. The Apostle Paul warned us in 2 Corinthians 6:14, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” (ESV). It is very important that you choose a wife that is in full agreement with the Bible; someone who is godly and a devoted woman of Christ. The best wife for a Christian man is someone who has faith and the passion to praise and worship God. Be attracted to someone who is attracted to glorifying Christ. 

Searching for the Right Qualities

For you to be able to choose the right wife, it is essential that you look for godly qualities. Fortunately, the Bible has given us a clear picture of a godly woman. And one of the first few things that you need to look for in a woman is her relationship with Jesus Christ. The right woman out there is someone who has surrendered her life to Jesus Christ. The perfect wife is someone who submits to her Lord. By choosing a wife who submits to God, you can expect someone who is willing to submit to you as her husband. 

Ephesians 5:22-24 is clear, “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.” A true Christian wife is someone willing to submit everything to her husband. She is not likely to observe submission to her husband if she herself is not willing to surrender to the Lord. 

The Bible also gives us an idea of what character traits you should look for in a woman or your future wife. 1 Timothy 3:11 tells us that “Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things.” (ESV). The Bible encourages us to find a woman who is humble and not proud. You should choose those women who have wisdom and know how to speak when to speak, and when to be silent. It is essential that the husband is confident with her confidence. Find a woman who values respect and modesty. We should look for a woman who walks in the light and knows how to value fellowship with other believers (1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.).

 

Asking the Holy Spirit 

In order for us to find and choose the right woman, we need to pray to God. Prayer is very powerful and can help you make good decisions in life, such as choosing a wife. Reading the Bible every day and knowing God’s will is also necessary if you truly want to choose a good wife out there. Of course, we must also seek help from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit leads us to the right path and correct decisions. It is said that “those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God” (Romans 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons[a] of God.).

When choosing a wife, we all have our own standards. But as Christian men, it is critical that we base our standards on the Bible. Remember that God has provided us with the necessary guidelines to enjoy our wife and marriage. Living a happy life with your wife is expected if we base our preferences on God’s Word. And finally, always remember that a wife who is willing to give her life to God is a wife who is also willing to give her life to her dear husband.
